Baltic Huis sets October Opening in Brooklyn, NY

Baltic Huis, a 33-room boutique hotel, is set to open in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighbourhood in October. Located at 489 Baltic St., Baltic Huis—Huis meaning house or home in Dutch—will be a short distance from the city’s Gowanus Canal. In the midst of a transformation, the neighbourhood has seen an influx of new art spaces, music venues, restaurants and bars.

The hotel’s informed design will blend industrial, relaxed design and technology with a strong sense of locality. To reflect the mix of industrial warehouses and row homes, Greenwich Street Equities tapped local design firm Gradient Architecture. At the hotel’s entrance and reception area, there will be found art, local photography and industrial relics on display. One of the hidden spaces on-property will be a subterranean coffee shop and, with the whisper of a secret Dutch password, other treats such as rare Japanese whiskeys may be available—paying homage to the area’s lingering speakeasy spirit, according to the company.

Guestrooms will be outfitted with Amazon’s Alexa Smart Home devices, which are programmed to play guests’ music of choice, check the weather or assist with ordering a treat from Ample Hills Creamery. Smartphones are provided in each room for local calls and reading complimentary digital newspapers, neighbourhood guides and more.

In addition, Baltic Huis will offer co-working space in the coffee shop and enlist local purveyors from Gotham Archery, Brooklyn Boulders and Brooklyn Paranormal Society to provide experiences inside and beyond the hotel walls. There are also complimentary Citi-Bike passes and custom maps of local graffiti and history tours for on-peddle exploration of the borough.
