Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris, France reveals two floors of renovated rooms and suites
Hôtel Plaza Athénée, a Dorchester Collection hotel, has revealed 49 renovated rooms and suites on its fifth and sixth floors, including the legendary Royal Suite.
Led by acclaimed French interior design firm, Moinard Bétaille, the hotel’s iconic style has been re-imagined with a contemporary feel, while still retaining the 18th century and Haute Couture style that is central to the ethos of the hotel. The project marks the continuation of a partnership between Hôtel Plaza Athénée and Bruno Moinard and Claire Bétaille, who also oversaw the design of the hotel’s Lobby, The Gallery, La Cour Jardin and Le Relais Plaza.
THE NEW STYLE
Designed as true Parisian apartments, each room and suite offers a different layout, ensuring that no two rooms are the same, and allowing guests to rediscover Hôtel Plaza Athénée every time they visit. Six new colour palettes have been designed to bring a touch of freshness and softness to the property, amidst its 18th century backdrop.
The Virginia creeper plant that adorns the façade of the hotel’s iconic interior courtyard – La Cour Jardin – appears throughout the design; from mouldings and mosaics, to the embroidery of cushions, carpets and moiré silks. Silk has also been used for the headboards, creating a foliage and feather design that echoes the lightness and comfort of the beds themselves.
The new rooms and suites feature Louis XVI-style bedside tables, classic painted wood furniture paired with marble tops and bronze fittings, and chests of drawers that have been specially designed to complement the collection of period furniture that has been restored for the project.
The lighting provides a warm atmosphere by highlighting the mouldings, materials and textures used in each room. Tailor-made hanging lamps, placed on either side of the beds, pay homage to antique lanterns, with hand-decorated glass elements that reflect gold sparkles. The rooms and suites are also adorned with chandeliers that are comprised of iridescent pendants.
In the bathrooms, mouldings and mosaics with foliage motif envelop the marble that covers the floors and walls, adding a touch of colour and echoing what is found in the bedrooms.
THE ROYAL SUITE
Located on the fifth floor, The Royal Suite is one of the largest suites in Paris. With a total area of 450m2, the suite comprises four bedrooms and bathrooms, a living room, dining room, pantry, and balcony, from which guests can enjoy spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower, avenue Montaigne, and the hotel’s La Cour Jardin.
The suite’s mouldings, cornices and Versailles parquet floors pay tribute to the hotel’s rich history and hidden details are incorporated throughout to surprise and delight guests including a bar concealed in a travel trunk and a crystal counter that reflects the light and views of the suite.
One of the bathrooms in the suite is equipped with a sauna and a hammam and adorned with Italian marble and mosaic arabesque patterns. Triptych mirrors above the central sink and the vanity reflect the subtle and soft ambient lighting, enhancing the serene atmosphere.
THE ICONIC BALCONIES ON THE SIXTH FLOOR
The six balcony rooms and suites on the sixth floor, which are surrounded by the hotel’s famous red geraniums, have also been renovated. Famed for welcoming high profile guests across the decades, the rooms offer uninterrupted views of the Eiffel Tower and the avenue Montaigne.
SUSTAINABLE ENHANCEMENTS
Hôtel Plaza Athénée is committed to incorporating sustainable practices, evident throughout the renovation process. The hotel’s façade has been externally insulated to improve thermal performance and limit energy consumption. Presence sensors and intelligent home automation have been installed to control the lighting and temperature settings in each room.
Waste sorting bins have been introduced in the rooms to assist with recycling, and bathrooms have been equipped with refillable containers for toiletries, as well as amenities that can be recycled in their entirety.
