Introducing the new Zed Rooms – to help guests ‘sleep like a baby’

Designers have dreamed up the ultimate bedroom to help hotel guests quite literally sleep like a baby.

Experts have spent nine months meticulously developing the The Zed Room state-of-the-art apartments, which feature a ‘Woom’ bedroom with a cocoon-like bed, inspired by the safety and snugness of a womb.

Officially called The Zed Rooms, the unique sleeping experience was inspired by the ‘safety and snugness’ of a womb. The rooms have soft lighting, peach walls and comfortable mattresses to rest your head on which, combined, are meant to promote relaxation and REM sleep.

The rooms were inspired by the last few weeks of pregnancy when the baby increases its REM sleep, getting an average of 12 hours per day. To help you get a better sleep, the rooms have also been fitted with restorative scents and colours designed to relax and soothe.

The Zed Rooms are a collaboration between Simba and serviced apartments Cuckooz. Resident sleep psychologist at Simba, Hope Bastine, said: “If you’ve ever noticed that you don’t sleep as well in a hotel, you’re not alone.

“Scientists recognised the first night effect over a decade ago, where one half of the brain unconsciously acts as a night watchman staying more alert when in unfamiliar surroundings. With this in mind, tapping into the emotional and physical, no stone has been left unturned trying to soothe the effects of this in the design architecture of our new cutting-edge sleep retreat.”

The state-of-the-art bedroom design aims to help mute the brain’s ‘red alert’ status it develops when sleeping in a new place.

Using insights rooted in the science of sleep, the apartments have been designed to engage with every sensorial touchpoint of the body, creating an entire ecosystem that helps guests to sleep from the moment they step through the door.

The furniture has rounded edges and softened corners, while rocking chairs are on hand to lull guests into a relaxed state of mind.

The apartments also have bespoke recipe suggestions, rich in serotonin, melatonin and tryptophan – created in partnership with celebrity favourite Detox Kitchen – which help guests to sleep.

The rooms have air-cleansing soporific plants to eliminate toxins and healing background harmonies to unwind. Each apartment also comes with yoga mats and meditation sessions via the iPad’s Calm app.

The Zed Rooms also incorporate Simba’s hybrid mattress, developed using complex body profiling data of 10 million sleepers, and temperature regulating pillows and duvets, using space-certified technology.
