Ion City Hotel opens in Reykjavik
The Ion City Hotel is celebrating its soft opening in Reykjavik’s main avenue of Laugarvegur. The 18-room hotel features a cool Nordic design akin to its sister property—the Ion Adventure Hotel—provided by brand founder Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir and Santa Monica, California-based architecture firm Minarc.
The hotel is housed within a renovated structure, whose original concrete architecture is augmented by exterior aluminum panels clad with a textured motif inspired by traditional Icelandic weaving. An extensive outdoor mural from Krístin Morthens animates an inner alleyway and courtyard with an abstraction of an Icelandic landscape.
Organic interiors are characterised with clean lines and a palette of grey and white contrasting with warm-hued wood floors. Additional interior elements including gunmetal greys, finely grained recycled wood-panelled walls, and international design pieces flourish in abundant sunlight.
Accommodations range in size from 215 to 807 square feet. Standard and Deluxe rooms feature a window-side sofa, while the Junior suite is clad with a balcony and private sauna. The City suite features a French balcony, private indoor sauna, living room, and dining table. The Panorama suite includes an indoor sauna, a powder room, guest bathroom, and bar area.
