New opening – Vermelho, Portugal – Imagined and conceived by Christian Louboutin opening April 2023
This spring, Marugal will add a new hotel to its portfolio of individual luxury hotels with Hotel Vermelho, a boutique home-away-from-home imagined and conceived by the iconic fashion designer Christian Louboutin. The intimate 13-room hotel will open in the village of Melides, deep in Portugal’s Alentejo region, just inland of the west coast, south of Comporta and Lisbon. Louboutin, who has a long-standing admiration for Portugal, has spent many weeks designing his collections in the country inspired by the unique light and culture of the people. The name Vermelho, meaning red in Portuguese, is the perfect homage to his signature colour and the design pays homage to the unique natural beauty and heritage of the region.
With a passion for arts, crafts and cultures of the world and nurturing his curiosity by surrounding himself with artisans, artists and craftspeople, Louboutin was drawn to Melides, home to a flourishing creative community, where artists, painters, architects, and designers find inspiration in the gentle pace of life. This peaceful part of the country is home to vineyards, rice fields, white cobbled squares and endless views of the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon.
The interior of the hotel will be a showcase for Louboutin’s eclectic and maximalist aesthetic – intimate, warm and vibrant. He has personally sourced the furniture and collected the art and ceramics – all the while incorporating and celebrating Portuguese talent and traditions. In a spot known for its beautiful seafood, the restaurant will serve fresh seasonal organic food, focussing on fish and local produce and central to the hotel will be a jewel of a bar.
Portuguese architect Madalena Caido has worked on the plans, inspired by Portugal’s rural architecture. French landscape architect, Louis Benech, regarded as one of the most remarkable landscape architects of his generation with portfolio of public and private commissions around the world, from Peru to Morocco and the United States, has designed the hotel’s gardens also sit comfortably within the wider landscape in seamless harmony – colourful but natural. https://www.vermelhohotel.com/
