new properties in Boston, Zurich, and Amsterdam for citizenM
With the new properties launched within the last four weeks, the Dutch hotel brand has grown their global portfolio to a total of 19 locations…
citizenM Amstel Amsterdam (opened 15th July)
Amsterdam is citizenM’s spiritual home, where the brand was first conceived, then turned into reality with its first two hotels – citizenM Schiphol Airport in 2008, and citizenM Amsterdam Zuid in 2009.
Staying true to the quest for triple-A urban locations, citizenM Amstel Amsterdam is tucked into Amsterdam’s historical canal ring, between the areas of Weesperbuurt-en-Plantage and Oude Pijp. From this point, mobile citizens of the world can reach a multitude of leisure and business destinations by foot within 15 minutes. Most noteworthy points nearby are: Amsterdam’s historic city centre, Koninklijk Theater Carré, University of Amsterdam, the Hermitage Museum, Artis Royal Zoo, and a multitude of shopping streets. Two tram lines in front and Weesperplein metro station just a few steps away connect mobile citizens to all of Amsterdam and beyond.
citizenM Amstel Amsterdam, designed by Amsterdam-based partner Concrete, is a beauty to behold from the outside. The hotel is a conversion of an existing structure dating back to 1928, built in the Amsterdam School style of architecture. The decorative red brick exterior with its multitude of elegantly slender windows stands out among the neighbouring buildings on Sarphatistraat. At street level, the hotel will distinguish itself even more with a bespoke art installation across the eight main windows. The artistic photographer duo – and our previous Schiphol collaborators – Freudenthal Verhagen have created a series of water-themed pieces inspired by Amsterdam’s centuries-long reliance on rivers and canals.
citizenM Zurich Talacker (opened 1st August)
As usual, citizenM’s key focus was on securing a five-star city location. This is Talacker 42, a building in District 1, right on the edge of the Old Town. Nearby – Paradeplatz with a multitude of international headquarters and public transport connections, and Bahnhoffstrasse – one of the world’s most famous and exclusive shopping avenues. Lake Zurich is just a few minutes away by foot.
The hotel is a conversion of an existing five-storey office/retail building from the 1950s, and listed in the city’s portfolio of historically significant buildings. With the opening planned for the 1st of August 2019, the new citizenM Zurich hotel is already gathering attention in the local and European press with its ‘citizens of Zurich’ temporary art installation, currently on show across all windows of the facade. The campaign – which, after July 25, will live permanently in a smaller scale within the hotel – is a series of portraits of 36 noteworthy women of Zurich. The goal: to champion their wisdom, knowledge, energy, success, intelligence and beauty in a male-dominated world of big business and finance. All portraits were taken by the local photographer Lauretta Suter. Meanwhile, the permanent facade artwork is by Jean-Vincent Simonet, who fuses analogue images, digital techniques, collage and montage with remarkable fluidity.
citizenM Boston North Station (opened 5th August)
Located in Boston’s North End, locally known as “Little Italy,” the new hotel will give guests the opportunity to indulge in cultural adventures before returning for well-deserved rest. Tourists and business travelers will easily maximize their leisure and work time, thanks to the hotel’s superb location close to the city’s major points of interest including Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston Common, and the harbour with its Boston Tea Party ships and museum. The hotel is also connected to TD Garden – New England’s largest multipurpose arena for sports, concerts and conventions.
citizenM Boston North Station was built in collaboration with long-time partner design-firm concrete Amsterdam, and Gensler as the executive architect firm. It is a high-tech hotel, where modern travelers can sleep and work while enjoying contemporary art, designer furniture, and 24/7 food and drinks.
