Run For The Hills designs first ever TIVOLI boutique cinema
London-based consultancy Run For The Hills is delighted to unveil its design of the interior of TIVOLI’s first location, launching December in Bath. TIVOLI is an exciting new breed of boutique cinema, a fantastic screening venue that is also a high-end social and dining destination in its own right.
Run For The Hills’ branding team worked first with the cinema to conceptualise a signature brand and visual identity, before the studio’s interior design team dived into the styling of the first location.
TIVOLI has four, fifty-seat screening studios and a twelve-seat Directors Lounge/Screen bookable upon request, offering
an exclusive cinematic and dining experience in a premium environment. The first location in Bath boasts state-of-the- art technology, stylish interiors and an impressive food and beverage offering, and the venue has also been designed to host parties, events and private screenings.
Creative Director, Anna Burles, of Run For The Hills says: “This is our first foray into cinema design and we’ve absolutely loved it. Tivoli is a bold, charismatic new concept and our interior styling marries seamlessly with TIVOLI’s branding, also designed by our graphics studio. The overall look and feel of our interior scheme is laid-back luxe, super stylish but very welcoming and ultra comfortable. Our client really enjoys the design process and it has been a privilege developing the concept with him.”
PALETTE & FINISHES
TIVOLI has an earthy and warm palette, paying homage to the natural world, but with an urban, Deco twist. The core colour palette features rich golds, green, ochre and dusky blue tones in slouchy linens, brassy velvets and deeply textured weaves. In terms of materials, chalky and marbled stones and tactile finishes are paired with a strong mix of patinated metals including bronze, antique brass and blackened steel.
The building’s exterior features a large, bespoke retro-styled ‘Now Showing’ screen within a blackened steel crittal frame, with a welcoming glow from subtlyback-lit lettering. Visitors are invited in through an oversized, dark door leading to a concierge-style lobby. The moody entrance is dressed with beautiful light fittings and softly illuminated decorative signage. A sweeping mesh and brass framed staircase takes you up to the open-plan beating heart of TIVOLI, on the light- filled first floor.
THE CAFÉ-BAR, LOUNGE & RESTAURANT
The hospitality space layout is designed to create natural zones between the bar, café-lounge area and more formal dining areas.
The first thing which greets people on the first floor is a beautiful hero bar, with glamorous bar stools in a mix of antique brass, blackened steel and dark tropical patterned velvet. A bold, monochrome tile-patterned floor leads you to
a 9m long arabescatto marble topped bar with heavy antique brass bullnose edging and a softly lit mesh front. Bar-top lamps create an intimate glow for guests enjoying cocktails. The exposed bar storage is crafted from a mix of rich toned timber, antique mirror and blackened metal and brass joinery. An orange/red TIVOLI neon sign, designed by the Run For The Hills graphics team, takes centre stage above the bar adding a vibrant shot of glamour. Floor-to-ceiling pillars are dotted throughout the space and the columns close to the bar are wrapped by circular drinks tables and upholstered bar stools. Custom-designed black iron and opalescent tube light fixtures wrap around the top of the columns, highlighting this show- stopping new bar-hop-destination for Bath.
Beyond the bar is a beautiful, inviting and relaxed café-bar and lounge area where guests can read the newspaper, have lunch with friends, work on their laptop while waiting for a train, or go for the full dining experience. Dotted with comfy sofas, deep armchairs, decorative rugs, warm wooden chairs and upholstered stools in contrasting textures and patterns. A black iron picture rail surrounds the entire perimeter of the space, used for hanging art on decorative chains and adding softness with textured curtains and drapes. Flooring and tiles are kept monochromatic, ranging from stone-hued neutrals to black and white stripes, letting the upholstery and soft furnishings play with colour and pattern.
As TIVOLI is an all-day venue, Run For The Hills styled the space with a morning-through-night feel. Oversized Georgian lattice windows cast streams of sunlight and long shadows onto the herringbone oak floor. After sunset, atmospheric lighting adds to the buzz around the bar area while soft, flattering pools of light zone the seating and dining areas. The designers custom designed many of the decorative lights to create an original TIVOLI style, with modern features paying homage to decorative old-world chandeliers, juxtaposed with industrial-chic, fixtures, shapes and finishes. The interiors and graphics teams also worked closely to merge lighting and creative signage throughout the space.
The café-bar is fully licensed, serving a selection of delicious food, cakes, pastries, coffee, wines, beers and cocktails throughout the day. Everything on the impressive menu is cooked onsite using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
Seating and tables within the lounge include an eclectic mix of leather, wood and upholstered dining chairs and chunky tables in wood, antique brass, marble and zinc. Armchairs, upholstered stools and beautifully upholstered banquette seating offer a range of eating and drinking zones.
At the far end of the space is a more formal restaurant area, the entrance is framed by curved urban-deco crittal screens that divide the space without closing it off completely. Behind the screens are full height drapes, allowing for more intimate private dining and events, giving maximum flexibility for either private or public use. The intimate, curved shaped sofa is perfect for romantic couples. Diners can choose to enjoy food and drinks on sofas and low level seating, perfect for day-time coffees or a night-cap after the late screen showing.
The four screening studios are glamorous boutique-sized cinema auditoria that use a palette of midnight blue and gold. Decorative trims and border details frame bold painted walls, creating a powerful backdrop to the relaxing atmosphere.
Fabrics and soft furnishings feature block colours, bold geometric patterns and pastels with pops of bright colours with contrasting piping and trims. The velvet-clad, sink-into, two-man and single sofas are paired with decorative cushions for extra comfort. Each sofa has a handy shelf on the back
for personal effects and is matched with a table for in-screen drinks and dining. The sofas on the front row are paired with velvet and leather footstools. Inky-blue fabric-draped walls are lit with soft washes of light and low-level bespoke table lamps add to the gentle ambiance. For the floor, Run For The Hills designed a bespoke carpet featuring a pattern derived from TIVOLI’s logo.
THE DIRECTOR’S LOUNGE SCREENING ROOM
The cosy, exclusive twelve-seater Director’s Lounge is sleek and sophisticated. The room has its own dedicated foyer and entrance with a private adjoining hospitality lounge featuring high-end leather sofas and an in-screen honesty bar. Dark leather seating, geometric wall-fabric and upholstered wood panels are used throughout. Dark tropical print cushions add an unexpected flair. The room is filled with custom joinery and brass accents and each of the two-seater sofas is paired with a footstool ensuring the ultimate cinematic experience.
A decorative blackened steel archway, with globe feature lighting, leads to beautifully light and airy statement bathrooms. The design team created an unusual pivoting window mirror to make the most of the statement windows within the space. The bathrooms are filled with highlight basins, bronze fretwork mirrors and terrazzo flooring. Everything is monochrome with just a hint of colour on the floors.
ART & OBJECTS
The venue is finished with layers of accessories to add soul and underline the subtext of the TIVOLI story. Shelves are decorated with quirky artworks and decorative objects that are subtly filmic and designed to get people talking over their coffee or cocktail. Framed and unframed fine art and prints are woven into the canvas of the overall design, nestled amongst props and objects decorating walls and fireplace mantels, softly lit by picture lighting.
The venue is also filled with partially-hidden TIVOLI imprints for guests to discover. And to create a fun memento from your time at TIVOLI, a cool, interactive photo booth will allow visitors to capture and share their experiences.
