SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, COLOMBO INTRODUCING A NEW LEVEL OF LUXURY IN COLOMBO
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s premier hotel management companies, unveils plans for a brand new state-of-the-art business and leisure hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Set to open in late 2017, Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo is the most anticipated luxury hotel opening in Colombo for almost 30 years. Positioned between Galle Face Green promenade and Beira Lake, the hotel boasts a prime location in Colombo’s thriving business district with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. The Shangri-La property is an integral part of the new One Galle Face development project which will see the opening of two residential towers, a high-end shopping centre and modern office space over the next three years.
Singapore based architecture firm Chao Tse Ann & Partners is responsible for the design of the tower which will house the hotel. The company has a longstanding relationship with Shangri-La and most recently designed, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, which opened in June 2016 on Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo will offer 500 guestrooms and suites and 41 serviced apartments. LTW Designworks, has designed the rooms, public areas, meeting rooms and spa in a contemporary style with Shangri-La’s signature Oriental detailing. “We let our imagination re-invent and bring to life the beauty of the abundant nature that Sri Lanka is blessed with in a very contemporary context” explains Hená Yadav, Senior Designer at LTW Designworks, Singapore. The design firm has previously worked with Shangri-La on several other projects, including Shangri-La Diging (2015), Shangri-La Lhasa (2014) and the brand’s flagship property, Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort, Maldives (2009). In keeping with the nature theme, the hotel has commissioned celebrated Chinese artist, Man Fung-Yi to create an elephant structure which will grace the hotel’s lobby and give guests a sense of place. The hotel’s five main restaurants are the work of Japanese design studio Bond Design Studio Inc. whose designer Ryoichi Niwata recently won a Platinum A’ Design Award for New York’s Midtown Brewery Restaurant.
Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo will have the largest and most extensive hotel conference and events facility in the region with a 1,500-capacity ballroom showcasing artwork by acclaimed artist, Bea Valdes. The hotel is set to become a magnet for conferences and events and will enable Sri Lanka to compete globally with MICE hotspots, including Bangkok and Singapore.
