SOPHY Hyde Park, a new boutique hotel, opens next month in Chicago

Posted in News, Projects on 11 September, 2018

With 98 rooms, the new boutique hotel, SOPHY Hyde Park will open at the beginning of October near the University of Chicago campus, the Museum of Science and Industry and the future site of the Obama Presidential Library.

The guest rooms and suites were inspired by Hyde Park’s fine arts history and each room is anchored by an 8-foot abstract painting by local artist Joey Korom. The rooms, featuring hardwood floors and custom lighting, are finished with books and a record player with a selection of local musicians on vinyl.

The new hotel includes a bar and restaurant, Mesler Kitchen Bar Lounge, focused on a mix of casual and upscale dining options. The spot’s name means ‘to mix and mingle’, meant to reflect the racially and culturally diverse Hyde Park. Executive chef Bradford Shovlin, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park who previously worked at Michelin-starred North Pond and Iron Horse in Milwaukee, will helm the restaurant.

The 60-seat restaurant, separated from the hotel reception area with a double-sided fireplace, features a gallery of book covers and original artwork by students from nearby Hyde Park Academy High School. An outdoor lounge area seats 24 guests and an indoor private dining room seats up to 14 people with its own outdoor patio and fire pit.

Clad with Norman brick, similar to the masonry at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, Chicago-based GREC Architects and interior design firm Stonehill Taylor designed SOPHY Hyde Park. The hotel was developed by The Olympia Companies and SMART Hotels and it is managed by Olympia Hotel Management.
