Material Intelligence for Architecture and Design

Why making matters

There isn’t long to go now until the doors of Material Matters London 2025 swing open. One of the first things visitors to Space House will see is the return of In The Making. The compelling exhibition, curated by leading design and architecture practice tp bennett and Future Works, the innovation partner of The Furniture Practice, invites visitors to reflect on the environmental impact of design and the evolving role of materials in shaping a more responsible future.

It builds on the success of last year’s edition by addressing the true cost of what we create, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. The exhibition is structured around three elemental zones: Land, Water, and Atmosphere, echoing the original environmentalist framework and offering a thematic lens through which to explore material impact.

World Design Congress ticket offer

September is shaping up to be a busy design month in the UK’s capital. As well as the London Design Festival and Material Matters London (of course), the World Design Congress also rolls into town for the first time in 50 years. The event, organised by the Design Council, runs from 9-10 September at Barbican Centre and includes a glittering array of speakers such as Lord Foster, Thomas Heatherwick, Earthshot prize winner Charlot Magayi, economist Marianna Mazzucato, and the legendary Brian Eno.

The next iteration of Material Matters bookshop will also feature as part of the Congress experience, before we set up shop at Space House the following week.

And the good news is tickets are still available. Use this Promo Code LONDON25OFFER for £100 off the 2-day ticket. Book via the link below.

On the spot

While In the Making investigates the more commercial end of the design world, there is still plenty of space for experimentation at Material Matters London. Micaella Pedros, a French designer and maker working in London, explores the transformative power of overlooked materials, often working with reclaimed wood and discarded plastics.

At the fair, she will present her new body of work, Many Parts, a material investigation of form around post-consumer plastic waste. The collection engages both recycled plastic panels and other discarded plastic material as sources of inspiration, unveiling unique works merging material experimentation with sculptural form.
