YTL Hotels’ Academy Hotel, Bloomsbury, reveals details of its redesign
The Academy Hotel, London’s most exciting new boutique property, is excited to share details of its multi-million-pound interior redesign by world-renowned New York-based firm, Champalimaud. Located on the leafy streets of Bloomsbury in London’s West End, the hotel is the latest addition to the prestigious YTL Hotels UK portfolio. Champalimaud has worked closely with the team to convert five Georgian townhouses into a charming, sophisticated and historically relevant hotel in London, in keeping with the understated luxury that the YTL Group are known and loved for worldwide.
Inspired by the Bloomsbury Set who lived and worked in this part of London in the early 20th century, the interior of The Academy Hotel is a charming blend of modern and vintage. The team at Champalimaud – which is also known for its work on YTL Hotels’ first British property The Gainsborough Bath Spa – has created a space that recognises the style and exuberance of the Bloomsbury Set, while also drawing on inspiration from modern-day London.
Each of the 50 elegant guest rooms have been designed to celebrate 240 years of the Georgian hotel’s history. High ceilings and sash windows give the light-filled bedrooms an immediate sense of calm, while en-suite marble bathrooms and high king-sized beds add to the luxury. The soft furnishings of each bedroom have been meticulously chosen to combine timeless glamour and fresh, contemporary city style. Statement walls feature fanciful wallpaper from the legendary Cole & Son, while arm chair, cushion and curtain fabrics have been sourced from Lee Jofa, a company that has been producing beautiful prints and fabrics since 1823, and British brand Osborne & Little, amongst others. Guests may choose from the Bloomsbury Suites, which encompass a generous living space, the Bloomsbury Double, the Townhouse Twin room and the Townhouse Single, a cosy room for solo travellers.
Beyond the elegant guest rooms is a hotel brimming with personality and thoughtful design touches. Located on the ground floor is the cosy Alchemy Bar, a beautiful room of olive-green velvet armchairs, marble-topped tables and statement wallpaper by Liberty which leads out into a sunlight-flooded garden.
At the core of Champalimaud’s design philosophy for The Academy is a home-from-home feeling. The historic property is filled with luxurious touches, jewel tones, leather and rich velvets, yet it’s a hotel that is effortlessly relaxed. It’s just another example of YTL Hotel’s commitment to understated luxury, which ranges from the now-iconic Gainsborough Bath Spa, to the private-island resort of Pangkor Laut, Malaysia. The Academy is part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection, and is ideally located just moments from the British Library, and many of London’s fine-dining restaurants and designer boutiques.
