GRAND MIRAGE RESORT & THALASSO SPA, BALI, INDONESIA
Set at the white-sand beach of the southern part of Bali, the enormous Grand Mirage Resort stretches over eight hectares and features an all-new kids area…
Located in Nusa Dua in the southern part of Bali, Grand Mirage Resort & Thalasso Spa Bali is a dream destination both in terms of its offerings and design. The sandy beaches, heaps of sunshine and beautiful blue water become design features on their own, but with organic interiors and a new colourful family area, the hotel is a top hit.
Originally opened in 1993, 2017 saw a renovation of some of the rooms and the public areas, reinstating the hotel as a modern destination. The redesign aptly reflects the dualism between serenity and activity, which the island of Bali is so renowned for.
Public Spaces
The lobby at Grand Mirage was renovated in 2017 and now properly echoes the grandness of it. The floor is covered in cream travertine floors, glossy and luxurious, with a huge and interesting chandelier hanging above it. Vertical light pendants hang from a panel shaped like a honeycomb – minimalist, yet impactful. The honeycomb-theme is revisited at the reception desk with a honey-coloured front panel on the desk and an intriguing artwork behind it.
The furniture is organically shaped with natural curves and pops of colour to contrast the overarching cream accents. Oh, and let me not forget to mention the lush waterfall surrounded by shrubs and greenery found in the middle of the lobby, which provides a peaceful trickling of water as you arrive.
Accommodation
Offering a fantastic 380 rooms and suites, all of them has a balcony giving either with a lawn garden or ocean view. The original rooms are designed in earthy colours of warm wood, bamboo and sand. It is the perfect marriage between contemporary western design and traditional Indonesian elements as Balinese artwork and inscriptions can be found on doors and headboards.
The bathrooms feature separate showers and baths and is uniquely enhanced with wooden shutters separating it from the bedroom. Opulently decorated with warm tiles, free-standing baths and luxurious finishes, the bathrooms are instantly indulgent.
The spruced-up rooms are still organically decorated, but have been given a modern face-lift adding more funky furniture and hints of colour. Light blues add an airy and breezy feel to the room, circular mirrors bring the contemporary look into them, while carefully selected artwork maintains the traditional characteristic of the hotel.
The newly and uniquely designed Family Paradise wing is an inspiring complex with innovative rooms and great facilities. With a Family Pool Villas and Family Studios, the interior is distinctly more playful – bold colours have been used for furniture and fittings, as well as on bright wallpapers and digital prints.
A personal favourite is the Thematic Suite, cheerfully designed with colourful and unique ornaments. Bright pink and turquoise is applied to walls, steps and floors, contrasted by white-painted inscriptions and illustrations. Details of gold can be found in mirrors and lamps, giving it a luxurious feel. Playful details such as the bathroom sink sitting on a bicycle cart with pink wheels make the suite stand out.
Newly decorated apartments are also on offer at Grand Mirage designed to mirror the ocean. With different layers of tropical blues, the designers have used a mixture of traditional and modern patterns on furniture, soft furnishings and wallpapers.
F&B
The resort has several restaurants, each offering cuisine from around the globe, with emphasise on Asian food.
The Grand Café is located just off the lobby and leads directly onto the pool area. Offering all-day food service, it’s a simply designed area, ideal for a quick bite before you head back into the pool or to the beach again. Wicker bistro furniture with glass-top tables create a distinctly French atmosphere.
Bumbu is the Indian restaurant and is located on the second floor, offering great views of the ocean. Decorated to resonate the feel of India, you’ve got the traditional lanterns, separation walls and patterns.
Next-door is the Panorama Bar, which indeed, offers panoramic views of the sea and the resort. Sophisticated and stylish, the bar serves awesome cocktails and have nights with live music. The area is decidedly more masculine in its interior with sensual furniture and dark accents.
Beach-side dining is available with the trendy Juking Grill, which takes advantage of the experiences of the senses in their design. The sound of the waves and the breeze, the smell of the sea and the crushing of sand all match the organic design.
If by the beach isn’t enough for you, on the beach dining is also on offer at La Cascata, which is the night-time version of Juking Grill. When darkness falls, La Cascata serves dinner on the beach, right by the sea. Feel the smooth sand between your toes and feel the warm ocean breeze hit your face while enjoying Italian-inspired dishes with a focus on delicious seafood.
Ibu Kitchen is the ultra-hip restaurant that offers traditional Indonesian food with a creative twist. The exotic flavours of Indonesia are presented with an elegant and modern touch, which also represents the interiors.
Mahi Mahi is another poolside restaurant offering international food in an airy and contemporary style. Large windows and open spaces contrast the large industrial pillars and glass roof. A kind of factory-feel is created, juxtaposed by playful table-tops decorated in colourful illustrations.
In true paradise-style, there is a bar inside the pool called the Coconut Bar, which serve drinks all day long. Formed like a traditional beach hut, the thatched roof covers a circular bar with stools attached to the pool floor, so you can sit submerged in the delightful water while sipping a local cocktail.
Restaurant Chopstick is the resort’s Japanese outlet and is decorated to transport you straight from Bali to Japan. Beautiful cherry blossoms welcome you into this stylish and charming space, where sophisticated furniture is matched with traditional Japanese ornaments.
