The Doubletree by Hilton Melbourne
Steering away from the generic, Dreamtime Austrailia complete a very unique design to the public areas of the Doubletree Melbourne and its talent didn’t go unrecognised as it has won best new design hotel in the world the WIN (World Interior News) Awards…
The now-award-winning Doubletree by Hilton Melbourne project involved the repositioning of the hotel with a complete refurbishment including the external façade, lobby, restaurant, 180 guestrooms and bathrooms, and 12 levels of lift lobbies and corridors.
The project design brief to Michael McCann (Dreamtime Australia Design) and Melissa Chen (Mill Interiors) was to steer away from the generic mid level international hotel interiors model and instead deliver a unique destination experience that reflects the hotel’s Melbourne urban, cool location amidst the gritty, semi-industrial Flinders Street neighbourhood, opposite the historical French-renaissance Flinders Street Station.
Use of raw materials, exposed services, mood lighting, custom design features and eclectic design details are balanced to achieve the gritty vibe of the Flinders Street neighbourhood, as well as the “passage of time” from its 1920’s heyday, when the historic Flinders Street Station was one of the world’s busiest train stations.
The bustling inner city location and refurbishing a trading hotel was not without its challenges. Guest disturbance needed to be kept to an absolute minimun. A close working relationship between the hotel owner, interior designers, project manager, building contractors and hotel management was vital to the project’s success. The result – a stylish and evocative destination hotel experience, which is uniquely Melbourne.
