The Hoxton announces the evolution of Stay For A Stay

Check in to help out.

As winter hits and record-breaking levels of inflation escalate the cost-of-living crisis, The Hoxton is strengthening its support of the homeless communities in and around its neighbourhoods as it announces the evolution of its Stay For A Stay initiative. The Hoxton is in the business of putting roofs over heads and so the key mission remains; to donate as many winter shelter beds as possible, and for every January and February stay booked directly between 8th – 26th December, The Hoxton will donate the cost of a stay at one of its partner shelters. It’s simple: when a guest hits the hay at the Hox, they’ll be helping someone in desperate need stay safe and warm for the night too. And this year The Hoxton is committing to going one step further with an ongoing package of proactive support, created in collaboration with its partner charities to target the unprecedented challenges in terms of rising costs and reduced resources each shelter is facing.

The cost-of-living crisis has dominated the news for most of the year, but as winter hits the UK is faced with deeply unsettling record-breaking statistics; namely the highest inflation in 40 years* and the sharpest fall in real-time pay for more than two decades. Add to this the rise in private rents, up 16.1% in London from 2021**, a surge in “no-fault” evictions following the lift on eviction bans put in place during the pandemic and soaring energy costs, and the result is financial pressure cooker that has contributed to a 24% rise in people sleeping rough on the capital’s streets year on year***. However, homelessness is by no means an issue isolated to the UK, and over on America’s West Coast the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (Lahsa) has recently reported that 69,144 people are unhoused in LA County, marking a 4.1% increase since pre-pandemic levels****. And even in countries such as Germany where reports have shown an estimated 20% decline in official homelessness figures, it is widely understood that the number of “hidden” homeless, those relying on sofa surfing or staying in unsafe, unstable accommodation such as outbuildings and squats, is a very real and growing concern*****.

At a time where shelters are more needed than ever, many are collapsing under the pressure of ever-increasing service users and escalating operational costs. Shelters provide more than just a warm bed for the night; they’re a vital stepping stone for getting people on the road to better days, with resources dedicated to finding employment and education, health and legal advice, emotional support and helping to secure long term accommodation. But in order to do this far-reaching work the basics must be in place; in essence, shelters need their lights to stay on to keep their doors open. As well as seasonal fundraising through the Stay for a Stay initiative, The Hoxton’s teams across Europe and North America will be undertaking regular volunteering shifts throughout the year, as well as donating essential toiletries, bed linen, towels, and furnishings to shelters. Guests who wish to show their support are also able to make direct charitable contributions when booking their reservations online on thehoxton.com. Committed to providing tangible, long term support, The Hoxton has pledged to raise a total of £350,000 in support of its partner shelters by 2026.

Stay For A Stay continues to build on The Hoxton’s commitment to doing good for the communities around its hotels. In London, Stay For A Stay will support Shelter From The Storm, a night shelter based in Holloway. In its other global communities, Stay For A Stay will support: Aurore in Paris, Binario 95 in Rome, Het Stoelenproject in Amsterdam, Coalition for The Homeless in New York, Primo Center in Chicago, Blanchet House in Portland and Skid Row Housing Trust in LA.
